World Environment Day 2010 PDF Print E-mail

World Environment Day (WED) is a day of awareness of the environment and for the community to take action and it is on 5th June. The theme this year is "Many Species: One Planet, One Future." This highlights the theme of "Biodiversity - Ecosystem Management and the Green Economy."

As part of WED, EDA and Al Mahara Diving Center will be participating in ADMA-OPCO's "UAE Free From Plastic Campaign" on Tuesday 8th June - 10th June 2010 at the first Auditorium of ADMA-OPCO. This campaign will hightlight the banning of plastic bags in the future. Plastic bags are set to be banned completely in UAE from 2013 because most of the plastic bags are not reused and end up in land fill sites. By 2013, the Ministry of Environment and Water (MOEW) said it wants all residents to use alternatives like cotton or biodegradable plastic bags instead. The production and disposal of plastic adds to CO2 emissions, and the dumping of them contributes to pollution problems, as well as threatens wildlife.
